KUCHING, Oct 16 (Bernama) — Celebrations for Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng’s 89th birthday was a lively event when people from all levels of society thronged Padang Merdeka here to witness a special parade.
He arrived with with wife, Toh Puan Norkiah, with the couple accompanied by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Also present during the parade ceremony were ministers from the state cabinet, as well as heads of department and agencies.
This year’s parade saw the participation of 89 contingents from various agencies and departments.
Besides cultural performances and sounds of the Dirgahayu, a giant greeting card was presented to the Yang Dipertua Negeri as the highlight of the celebrations which was initially scheduled for Sept 11 (second day of Hari Raya) but postponed until today.
In addition to the parade, a ceremony to confer Sarawak awards and titles was held, as well as a dinner function at the new State Assembly building.
Meanwhile, a tea function will be held tomorrow at the Astana Negeri here.– BERNAMA
