MIRI: No leader can think of long term development plan without the strong support and solidarity of the people, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing the allegiance pledged by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) here yesterday, the Chief Minister urged the people to be cautious with short term leaders who would fight each other and caused political instability and disunity among the people.

Solidarity of the people was also essential for a leader to develop the state, he added.

His recent statement that he was ready to step down in the next state election and would leave it to the prime minister and the party (PBB) to decide his fate had received feedback from party members and members of the state BN component parties.

Commenting on the matter, Taib said he appreciated the support and calls from the various levels of the party urging him to remain as party president and the Chief Minister.

“I appreciate the strong support of PBB leaders and members to my leadership,” he said when asked by reporters for his comments on the feedback from PBB leaders and members.

He said the support showed that his leadership was still relevant even though some people denied it.

The Chief Minister thanked the people who supported his leadership as such support and solidarity would make it easier for him to lead the state.
