Know how democracy works, Siah told

KU C H I N G : D e p u t y Speaker of Parl iament Datuk Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (pic) has urged Francis Paul Siah to s tudy how democrac y works before making absurd demands l ike asking Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down.

“Pehin Seri is the President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) which registered 100 per cent victory in the just concluded state election. It won all 35 seats allocated to the party and by ‘convention, practice and tradition’ he is the rightful person to be the Chief Minister.

“I would like to explain to those who don’t understand...

that democracy is not from ‘all the people’ but from the ‘majority of people’ and the recent state election clearly indicated that the majority of people has given their mandate to the BN to govern the state.

“What right has Francis to oppose the choice made by the majority of people by making such a ridiculous demand. He even dared to threaten to hold street demonstrations if Pehin Sri does not step down by 13 August, an obvious threat to disrupt political stability and harmony in Sarawak.” Junaidi, who is also Santubong Member of Parliament said this when asked to comment on a police report lodged by PBB Kuching Youth on Monday over the alleged threats made by Francis (Siah) through his blog recently.

He earlier chaired a meeting which was attended by all surau and mosque representatives and village headmen from the Pantai Damai, Demak Laut and Tanjung Datu state constituencies here yesterday. The three state seats come under his Santubong parliamentary seat.

“I highly commend the action taken by Wan Hamzah Wan Paie the Kuching Zone PBB Youth Chief and his committee members for standing up against those people having ill intention against our Chief Minister and threatening the security of our state.

On Monday, Hamzah, who is also Junaidi’s senior personal secretary together with several PBB Youth Executive members and more than 50 ordinary members lodged a police report against Siah at the Central Police Station here.

This was followed by a series of reports made by PBB Youth wings from other divisions.

Hamzah said that PBB Youth would not stand still against any attempt to create chaos in the state by way of street protests like what had happened in many Middle East countries.

“PBB Youth views Siah a ‘potential subversive element’ capable of disrupting unity in the state.

We are urging, therefore, that the police conduct a thorough investigation to his writing on the blog,” he said.
