KUCHING: The state election may be held late next year probably after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, predicted Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur Development Haji Mohd Naroden Haji Majais, yesterday.
Naroden believes that the next State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, scheduled for May next year, would still be held and hence, the state election would not be held any sooner as speculated by political observers. The Simunjan State Assemblyman is of the opinion that the state election would be announced either after the DUN sitting in May or Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which falls on 31 August, next year.
“Although the State Legislative Assembly will expire by mid July, 2011, there is still 60 days’ grace period. So the latest possible date for the state election to be held is 19 September, 2011,” said Naroden, who also supported the idea for the state election to be held simultaneously with the parliamentary election as the Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had mentioned earlier of a possibility.
“If the state and parliamentary elections are held simultaneously, a lot of money would be saved. For this to happen (simultaneous state and parliamentary elections), then the parliamentary election is push forward and held much earlier,” he said.
