KUCHING: Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office, Tan Joo Phoi, yesterday added his support to the call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently that the Barisan Nasional must carefully vet its candidates to ensure only the winnable ones are chosen to stand in the coming election.

He told reporters this after officiating at the first anniversary celebration of Zheng Yi Enterprise, a directsale healthcare company with its office at Jalan Simpang Tiga here.

Tan said it was important that elected people’s representatives worked hard to serve the people sincerely and he had been doing so since his election as a State Assemblyman for the Batu Kawah constituency here.

Tan, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah Branch chairman, pointed out that the Batu Kawah constituency used to have 20 to 30 per cent Bumiputera voters but their number had increased to 40 per cent.

“The total number of voters for the area is more than 20,000 now with about 8,000 of them Bumiputera and 12,000 Chinese voters. It is quite a big, mixed constituency.

I have contributed as much as I can for the Chinese communities in the area as well as for those in the Bumiputera areas,” he told the media.

Meanwhile, SUPP leaders who had lent their support to the PM’s “only winnable candidates” call included its vice-president Lily Yong and Youth Central chief Sih Hua Tong. Both had said the candidates picked must be popular and have the strong support of the people on the ground to ensure victory for BN.

At the SUPP Convention held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here last Sunday, the Prime Minister urged SUPP to submit to him names of candidates who could win in the coming state poll.

He said that based on this principle, all the state BN component parties should therefore vet their potential candidates not only on their positions in the parties but also on other factors.
