Saberkas members want Taib to continue serving

E-mail Print PDF
MIRI: Some 190,000 Saberkas members throughout the state voiced their strong and unwavering support for Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud to continue lead Sarawak Speaking on behalf of members of the state premier youth organisation, Saberkas president Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg said Taib’s leadership was still relevant because of his vast experience in leading the state to achieve great social and economic development, including education and sports.

“Pehin Sri is a leader of the highest calibre who has led the state to rapid pace of development in the aspects of infrastructure, social, economic, education and sports,” Johari told a press conference.

He said all Saberkas members wanted Taib to stand during the next state election and stay as PBB president and the Chief Minister.

People nowadays could enjoy freedom, live in harmony with all communities besides enjoying the higher living standard under Taib’s leadership, he added.

He stressed that Taib not only had the ability to develop Sarawak, but also the ability to address the political situation and make the state the bastion of the Barisan Nasional.

Johari said the Chief Minister had changed the political pattern in Sarawak not only with physical development but also the mindset of the people so that they would know what development was all about.

He said that based on Taib’s leadership skills for the past 29 years, the Prime Minister had the confidence in him to be able to continue to lead Sarawak.

PBB Simunjan stands firmly behind CM

KUCHING: Pledges for Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to remain as Chief Minister continued yesterday.

This time around it was PBB Simunjan voicing their support for Taib, who is also state BN chairman and PBB president.

Simunjan assemblyman Mohd Naroden Majais, who signed the declaration of support, said it was because of Taib’s leadership and ability to govern the state that prompted the members to support him.

“Taib’s politics of development has proven to be very effective and this is the main reason why the state should want him to continue to lead, said Naroden, who is also Assistant Minister of Planning and Resource Management.

Naroden added that the people of Simunjan were very clear on this matter and united in their stand on Taib.

He added: “As long as he remains fit to serve the people, we do not see any other reason for him to quit.”

The statement ‘A memorandum of declaration to pledge loyalty and support to the leadership of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, Chief Minster and PBB President’ reads: “We, the PBB Simunjan branch who represents all party members and community has pledged and promise to remain loyal in our support to the Chief Minister.

“Therefore, we believe that the service and leadership of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is very much needed to lead Sarawak for further development. We will remain strong as we stand behind the Chief Minister to face all the challenges and outside threats that could disrupt the peace and harmony of the people of Sarawak.”

Naroden, who is also Simunjan PBB chief, highlighted that the statement was followed with a petition signed by supporters from the Simunjan district.

Waspada pemimpin jangka pendek

PBB Wanita: State BN wants Taib to stay

KUCHING: Sarawak Bar isan Nasional (BN) component parties want Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud to continue helming the state.

This was the firm stand taken by the parties at a two-day BN retreat, beginning June 22, in Mulu, said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Wanita deputy chief Datin Hajah Fatimah Abdullah.

She said party leaders and elected representatives from the fourmember state coalition had voiced out in unison, that Taib’s leadership was still needed.

Taib, 74, the longest serving chief minister since assuming office on March 26, 1981, is state BN chairman and PBB president.

Describing Taib as a dynamic leader, Fatimah, who is also minister in the Chief Minister’s Department in-charge of women and family development, said the chief minister could ‘glue’ the various BN component parties together.

She said this after launching the Datin Julia Chong Book Prize for Excellence in Music, organised by the Social Studies Department of the Batu Lintang Teachers’ Training Institute campus.

On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he would meet with Taib over the latter’s intention to withdraw from politics, pending approval from the top BN leadership.

Taib was quoted as saying that he wanted to step down in 2006, but decided otherwise, as many in PBB wanted him to stay on.

Fatimah said there were many issues, in terms of development programmes such as the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), that still needed Taib’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the Samarahan PBB Youth handed over a memorandum of support, urging Taib to remain as chief minister, to Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the Kota Samarahan’s civics centre near here yesterday.

Karim is also Taib’s chief political secretary. - Bernama

DUBS supports calls for Taib to stay

KUCHING: Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS) fully supports the calls on Chief Minister Pehin Seri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud not to give in to certain quarters and political analysts that it is time for him to step down as Chief Minister and PBB president.

Its president Datu Haji Abang Helmi Ikhwan said Taib was still needed as the political stability in the nation depended on the political conditions in Sarawak.

He pointed out that the oppositions’ strategy was to destabilise the political situation and position of the Bumiputeras in Sarawak and country in general.

He added that the result of the recent Sibu parliamentary by-election indicated that the support from the Malay community and other Bumiputera communities was still high at 75 percent.

Junaidi: Taib’s leadership and wisdom still needed

E-mail Print PDF
LUNDU: Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) still need the leadership and wisdom of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud especially in this critical moment – when the state election is around the corner.

Deputy Speaker (of Parliament) Datuk Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that based on his personal opinion, it was not wise to replace the Chief Minister at this time in the run-up to an election.

“To me, age is secondary. It’s ability and capability that count. If Pehin Sri is still capable and strong why can’t he continue to lead us,” said Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, adding that even the thought or talk of replacing Taib, especially at this time, should not have surfaced.

“This is also not about whether PBB do or do not have any ‘replacement’ candidates. We do have several ‘talented’ leaders in our midst should Pehin Sri decides to step down. However, this is not the right time,” he said, but declined to say who the ‘talented’ leaders were.

“Let Pehin Sri decide for himself when it is time for him to step down but for now, he should continue to helm PBB and Sarawak BN.

“When a ship is still halfway across the ocean in a stormy weather it is not wise for the crew to replace their captain who knows very well how to steer the ship to its final destination,” he said, likening the Chief Minister as the captain of that ship.

“Yes, as a PBB member and a community leader I sincerely support Pehin Sri’s leadership and I wish that he will continue to helm Sarawak,” Junaidi told journalists after breaking of fast with some 400 community leaders and ordinary people in Tanjung Datu in Lundu on Friday.

Earlier, he and Special Advisor to the Chief Minister cum Tanjung Datu assemblyman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Adenan Satem presented some donations to several handicapped people and the elderly in Lundu.

Junaidi’s wife, Datin Hajah Feona, who is also the honorary secretary of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (Perkim) Kuching together with Adenan’s wife Puan Sri Datin Amar Hajah Jamilah also handed over some food and undisclosed amount of cash to 75 single mothers and elderly women in the district.

Badan Amal Dan Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (Bakti), meanwhile, presented some cash to six brilliant Form 5 students from poor families in the district.

Victory assured if Taib is at helm — Daud

KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s continued leadership will be the key for the state BN to win the coming state election.Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, who said this, brushed aside an online news portal’s belief that if Taib stepped down it would help SUPP recover lost ground.

“Whether SUPP can gain support with CM stepping down is a hypothetical question. SUPP cannot direct the CM to step down. CM is the president of PBB and PBB will decide whether CM should step down or not.”

Daud, who is also PBB vice-president and Tupong assemblyman, told journalists this after handing out ‘bubur lambuk’ at Medan Hamidah at Jalan Bako near here yesterday.

On PBB, he said the party was not only confident of retaining all its 35 seats but also win with a bigger vote-majority in the coming state election.

This was because the party enjoyed strong ground support.

“If we go to war but are not confident of winning, then we might as well not fight… just surrender. Through our track record, I think the ground support is good.

“I am not boasting. I think the people want us to continue the good track record,” he said.

Asked whether he would be defending Tupong, Daud replied: “It is the prerogative of the state BN chairman. He wants a candidate who can win the area. He decides based on whether the person recommended by the respective parties have the support from the people.”

On the opposition, Daud described them as an entity filled with empty talk and promises.

He hoped Sarawakians would not be hoodwinked by the opposition’s tactic while assuring that the state BN wanted Sarawak to prosper as a developed and energy-producing state.

Citing land renewal premium as an example, he said the opposition could not deliver while the Sarawak BN lowered the premium to RM1,000 per terrace house.

“They shout at us but their fellow friends in Penang and Selangor do not follow what they want. How much is the renewal cost there? Why can’t the Pakatan Rakyat government reduce the premium?

“The opposition can shout and talk but they cannot deliver. The BN has a solid track record and with the continued leadership of BN, Sarawak will be one of the most prosperous states in Malaysia 20 or 30 years from now,” added Daud.

Rakyat masih sayang Taib

Hadir sama Setiausaha Politik Ketua Menteri Ripin Lamat, Timbalan Ketua Pergerakan Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Muara Tuang merangkap pengerusi bersama Hamzah Brahim, Pengerusi Bersama Datuk Safri Abdillah dan Wan Hamzah Wan Paee serta Ketua Penerangan Pemuda PBB Abdul Aziz Tan Sri Adenan.

N34 Krian Peter Nyarok Assistant Minister and Deputy President of SPDP will need to work doubly hard in the upcoming State Elections if he is to remain the assemblyman for the constituency. He will be challenged by his old nemesis SG of SNAP Edmund Stanley Jugol who has already made his intentions known at the Pakatan meeting recently.

This is one seat that SNAP steadfastly has indicated to their Pakatan partners that they are convinced that they will pull of a surprise and defeat the incumbent Peter Nyarok. There are three obvious reasons for that:

  • 1. Three cornered fight that is the inclusion of former Executive Secretary SPDP Banyi Beriak as independant candidate or PCM will be good for SNAP
  • 2. The unsolved SPDP5 problem will see a decline of the support from BN coalition partners
  • 3. The SNAP return from a “unrecognisable dead party” to now a Pakatan coalition will greatly help its cause. SNAP was a formidable force once.

Krian constituency (10429 voters) consists of 95% Iban and in 2006 Nyarok won by a majority of 2089 and the voters turnout was 72.48%.Nyarok garnered 4784 votes to Jugols 2695. There were 76 spoilt votes.

It seems that the Incumbent will be in for a tough Battle in the War in Krian N34. Would Banyi Beriak be the spoiler..??

WHAT DO YOU THINK…..??

Orang Cina Juga Kena Adil

Sediakah Cina kongsi?

Sarawak Pakatan's new battlecry 'Aram Berubah'

By Joseph Tawie

KUCHING: A new battle-cry, 'Aram Berubah', is set to echo throughout Sarawak in preparation for the forthcoming state elections. “Aram Berubah” is ‘Let’s Change’ in the Iban language.

Embracing the phrase last night, former law minister and PKR supreme council member Zaid Ibrahim flagged the new cry as he launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who he described as a “white elephant” monster.

His call for change “Aram Berubah” stirred the more than 300 diners at a PKR function organised by the Lubok Antu division.

“Changing Taib with another of the Barisan Nasional is not good enough. It is no different. We must change Taib and his government and replace with Pakatan Rakyat chief minister and government.” he said.

“This is our mission for the coming election, and the people must understand this,” he said, pointing out that Sarawakians must come forward in order to create a new political culture.

Zaid also stressed that the Pakatan Rakyat must be well prepared to face this monster, the “white elephant” which is very powerful and very rich.

“He is being supported by the government machinery including the police and the election commission.

“So it is important that we have proper planning and logistical support to fight him and his government and be ready for BN’s cheating and money” he added.

Be the agents of change

At the same event, Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian urged his fellow members to be ‘agents of change’.

“We cannot expect other people to change; it must begin with ourselves and for me, I am the agent of change.

“We do not have radio and television Malaysia (RTM) such as TV1, TV2 and TV3 or any other channel to pass our message for change to the people.

“But let us be the agents of change ourselves by visiting all the longhouses and villages and tell them about Pakatan Rakyat and its mission,” he said.

“Tell them that with their support this is the best time to change Taib’s government,” he said.

Another PKR leader vice president Jeffrey Kitingan, said in his speech that the state BN had begun “to feel the heat” of their (PKR) ceramah.

“They are in a state of confusion and feel threatened,” he said relating an incident at a function at Kampung Ensebang Kuari, Balai Ringin early in the day.

While the function was organised for visiting Zaid, the BN had organised a next door concert in a deliberate attempt to sabotage the PKR function and counter the impact of Zaid’s visit.

“They are frightened of us so much so they want to sabotage our function,” said Kitingan, pointing out that despite the attempted sabotage, the function went on smoothly.

Kitingan believed that with the support of the people, the rural areas which the BN claimed as their ‘fixed deposit’ are slowly slipping from their grips.

“It will be a loose deposit and what remains later on will only be the receipt,” he said to the laughter of the audience.

- Solid Q2 signals record year for Malaysia banks

Published: 2010/08/28

Earnings will continue to be on an uptrend in the next two quarters on the back of loan expansion, say analysts

Banks, as expected, turned in solid report cards in the second quarter, pointing to full year that could see record earnings for the industry as loans continue growing and provisions fall.

Analysts believe earnings, which probably came in at the highest ever for the April-to-June period, will continue to grow on a quarter-to-quarter basis this year.

Earnings will continue to be on an uptrend in the next two quarters on the back of loan expansion, especially on the retail side, and better fee-based income, said banking analyst Wong Chew Hann of Maybank Investment Bank Research.

"It should be another year of record earnings," she remarked.

Top banker Datuk Seri Nazir Razak concurred.

"This most likely will be a record year on continued loan expansion and as capital markets continue to be active," the chief of the country's second largest lender, CIMB Group Holdings Bhd CIMB, told Business Times yesterday.

The industry's loan growth has so far had been better than expected, coming in at 12.5 per cent as at end June from a year ago.

Some analysts are now looking to raise their loan growth forecasts for the year. Wong plans to raise hers to around 12 per cent compared to about 10 per cent before.

The industry seems to be in good health in terms of asset quality and banks also appear to have much better control over costs, analysts noted.

The only concern they had for the industry was the recent creeping in of much stiffer competition in the mortgage and hire-purchase loan segments, as well as in customer deposits, which could hurt margins.

Even foreign banks have been in the action, going all out to grab higher market shares in those areas by offering attractive rates and innovative packages.

"That puts pressure on margins but the OPR (overnight policy rate) hikes earlier may help cushion the pressure somewhat," said David Chong, an analyst at RHB Research Institute.

On the whole, banks' second quarter earnings were either in line with analysts' expectations, or slightly better than expected.

Analysts cited top lender Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) as having the best results as well as the best dividends of the nine local banking groups.

An analyst from a foreign research house felt that Alliance Financial Group Bhd, the smallest banking group, was the most disappointing in terms of loan and deposit growth.

Banks like Maybank and CIMB saw earnings from their overseas operations, especially Indonesia, come in strongly for the quarter.

War of words between DAP and Kuching council escalates

E-mail Print
By Joseph Tawie

KUCHING: The war of words between Kuching DAP and the Kuching south city council escalted between Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen and the Mayor James Chan. The latest incident occurred last Sunday at the Kuching city festival when a group of councillors and law enforcement officers tried to stop a DAP voter registration exercise headed by Chong.

There were heated arguments over whether the party had applied for a permit to carry out a voter registration exercise. Chong demanded the officers show them a provision in the council prohibiting a party from registering voters in the council's jurisdiction.

At a press conference yesterday, Chan slammed the DAP for carrying out a programme during the Kuching festival at Dewan Masyarakat.

He said that the festival which is an iconic event for the city, should not be used by any political party for political activities.

“The event which is meant to mark the commemoration of Kuching as a city has always been a place for families to have fun and for traders to earn extra income.

“It should not be used as a political stage, and it would be better off for the venue to remain that way instead of being used by others not associated with the festival,” Chan said.

He called on all political parties to respect the Kuching festival as a community event and hoped that it would remain that way.

He hoped in future political parties would seek permission first from the council and apply for a police permit if they wanted to hold a public gathering.\

Chan added that DAP should be professional about the matter and not to create a public nuisance at events such as the Kuching festival.

The council, he said, has its own by-laws, and anyone who contravenes its regulations would have to face the consequences.

No Openess and Transparency in DAP?

Just shut up on Ronnie Liu, Karpal tells DAP members

Saturday, 21 August 2010 16:23
GEORGE TOWN – DAP chairman Karpal Singh has ordered a gag order on all party members over Selangor Exco member Ronnie Liu and the support letter controversy.

“I am directing party members to stop speaking to the media regarding the matter. I am not appealing. I am directing them," he said here Saturday.

Karpal, who is also the Bukit Gelugor MP, said the issue was an internal matter and it would be resolved within the party.

He, however, did not specify if his directive was meant only for the mainstream media or if also covered the alternative media and social media.

According to The Star report, Karpal also admitted that the issue had smeared the party’s image in the eyes of the public.

Several DAP leaders, including those from outside of Selangor, have issued statement urging the party to sack Liu over his involvement in the support letter issue.

Letterhead evidence against Liu

PETALING JAYA: Evidence is beginning to surface that Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu had issued a letter of support to the very same company that caused his estranged supporter Tee Boon Hock to be sacked from DAP.

Liu is alleged to have personally issued the letter supporting Perkhidmatan AA to the Klang Municipal Council’s environment department director on April 14, 2008 – barely weeks after being made an executive councillor on March 24 of the same year.

Perkhidmatan AA is a company belonging to Tee’s son.

Tee was sacked from the DAP on Aug 1 after he was found guilty of writing a similar letter using Liu’s letterhead to support the same company.

However, Tee is alleging that Liu’s letter was written four months before his (Tee’s) letter, which was dated Aug 12, 2008.

Both letters were contained in a 12-page appeal by Tee to the DAP central executive committee (CEC) against the disciplinary committee’s decision to sack him.

A copy of the appeal was made available to The Star.

In the appeal, Tee, besides making various allegations against Liu, also called for the CEC member to be sacked from the party.

“The person who should be expelled from the party should be Liu and not me,” said Tee, adding that Liu was aware of the support letters he had written, and had “wilfully accused him of acting without his knowledge and authority.”

“This evidence exonerates the fact that I deliberately approved a letter of support to Perkhidmatan AA.

“There was no intention to deceive or cheat,” he said in his appeal.

Tee is asking the CEC to withdraw all charges against him and withdraw the expulsion letter with immediate effect, without any break in his membership.

He also asserted that due process in the disciplinary inquiry was not followed and he was not given a fair and just hearing.

The other grounds of Tee’s appeal are that Liu was not present at the hearing and he could not cross-examine the man who made the accusation against him, two DAP leaders whom he asked to represent him at the hearing were not allowed to do so and the disciplinary committee did not issue any show-cause letter or a charge sheet in writing, spelling out clearly the charges or allegations of misconduct or indiscipline.

Tee claimed that the only notice he received was an SMS from committee chairman Tan Kok Wai on July 29 at 7.03pm, asking him to attend the hearing at 4pm two days later, thus he was not given adequate time to prepare his defence.

According to a party official, the CEC deliberated on Tee’s appeal for four hours on Aug 12 but failed to reach a decision.

The official said five members had criticised Liu but many others kept quiet as they are aware that Liu enjoyed the “protection” of party stalwarts Lim Kit Siang and his son, Guan Eng, who is the secretary-general.

When contacted, Tee declined to talk about the contents of his appeal but said he was dismayed and disappointed over the speed and manner in which the disciplinary committee made its decision in sacking him.

Namewee hina Melayu dan hak Bumi dipersoal, Pemuda BN berdiam ...

Pengetua Racis: Pemuda BN Pun Sama Macam DAP

Jadi kalau Pemuda BN minta Pengetua sekolah tu diambil tindakan keras baik korang suruh PM ambil tindakan keatas pornstar Chua Soi Lek lagi bagus.

Contoh macam kawan baik Khairy, Namewee tu?

Kenapa Pemuda BN tak mahu ambil tindakan? Apa tak ade toloq ke Pemuda BN? Dengan Melayu kau berani tapi dengan bangsa pendatang habis kecut semua teloq. Pirahhh....!!!!

Pencen saja Cikgu. Semua hal guru2 nak dipolitikkan, biarkan budak2 tu tak berdisiplin dan besar jadi setan. Emak bapak tak ambil tahu pasal anak dan asyik pertahan anak.

Tak macam emak bapak dulu. Dulu kena sibat cikgu, balik kena tambah lagi. Sekarang kena sebat cikgu, emak bapak saman cikgu dan sekolah. Precious sangat anak tu ... BIar rosak pasal terlalu dimaja.
