KUCHING: Land Development Minister Dato Sri Dr James Jemut Masing yesterday challenged Democratic Action Party (DAP) to establish their own scholarship fund instead of criticising the federal BN government of not assisting top students.
Masing, who is state BN component Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, said it seemed that DAP ‘hasn’t graduated from opposition politics’ as they were only good in criticising and nothing else.
“DAP is accusing MCA/BN of not helping top students in getting scholarship, but DAP-held state (which is Penang) does nothing. Why don’t DAP establish in Sarawak something that is equivalent to Yayasan Sarawak scholarship fund for top students?” he asked yesterday.
Masing was referring to the ongoing media bickering between DAP and BN, especially its component MCA.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who is also Penang Chief Minister, recently ran down MCA’s efforts to assist top scorers who were overlooked by the Public Service Department (PSD) in the disbursement of scholarships.
MCA Youth secretary-general Datuk Chai Kim Sen, in his response, had said DAP should come up with remedies to stem the brain drain instead of finding fault with MCA.
“It is easy for Guan Eng to lash out at MCA, but time and again, DAP has failed to offer any viable solution. What have the Pakatan Rakyat state government done to prevent the brain drain?
“Did any Pakatan government offer any state scholarship or loans to those who appealed?” questioned Chai in a statement on Thursday.
It was reported recently that 86 SPM top scorers had appealed after they failed to qualify for this year’s PSD scholarships for a place to study overseas.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz had announced that these 86 top scorers would be given places in local private colleges and universities.
